Reinventing..

Reinventing..

Part of the reason I am so behind on getting my craft on, is that I desperately need to make over Mama’s Craft Room. I have been talking about what I want to do, how I want it laid out, where things will go, and on and on, for literally YEARS now. I have finally gotten the lay done, thanks to this nifty tool I found online. After taking measurements, and knowing what all storage I need, and what all horizontal surfaces I require, I began. I have come up with a great layout-IMO-and am ready to move on to Phase II: Implementation! I have cleared out most of the clutter, and moved all “not needing any time soon” things to the hall closet, such as massive amounts of retro polyester I’ve collected from a couple of sources, felt, and various holiday themed fabrics. I have patched the little cracks around the one arched window that have been there since the day we moved in and I never got around to, thinking I would have to tear the entire wall out and rebuild it (o.O) #whatwasithinking?! The cracks have never once changed in size, expanded or extended whatsoever, even through our crazy drought last summer! So I felt confident using a product made for cracks that may expand and contract slightly due to climate changes. I have so far applied it twice and it looks like I’m good to go. Phase III will commence tomorrow, hopefully, with-you guessed it-PAINTING!! YES! I have already bought the paint for my room!! I cannot wait to show it off to you all. Phase IV will consist of the laying out of said storage choices, including but not limited to the shelving I already have up there PLUS….custom floor to ceiling shelves for fabric, yarn and whatever other textiles, courtesy of Tim’s Workshop! Have I mentioned how lucky I am?? Then the Final Phase will begin: Organization. I am hoping this entire project will be finished by April 21st. Lofty, eh? A girl’s gotta dream.. I can’t wait to reveal my project desk. It was a nifty little old hardwood desk I picked up at Goodwill for $29.99. Since it is so solid, I thought it would make a great workbench type desk for jewelry making. The more I discussed it with the guys, including maybe putting a steel sheet on top, among other things, the idea grew, and the desk has become what I feel is a trip down Memory Lane work of art! I took several little findings I have collected over the year-some things were as old as from 1997-and laid them out covering most of the desktop. I hot glued, cemented, taped my way through the years of Great Memories, and when I was satisfied with the result, I sealed it in an epoxy resin!! I am THRILLED with it! Want a sneak peak??

I painted the entire desk “Mother Of Pearl” white, first. It only took about five coats…………………………. And then I forgot to paint the doors! But that turned out to be a good thing, as I will paint them one of my accent colors. I am highly motivated, and will keep you all, gentle readers, up to date as progress unfolds.

Time Flies..

Time Flies..

And I’m not even always having fun!! I started this blog, in hopes to fill it with fun tidbits of my life, share works-in-progress (WIPs), offer free tutorials, and to generally connect with fellow craftsters or people who like to craft vicariously through others. And so far, I have failed miserably at achieving this simple goal!  But I am working at getting back on track now, and hope to start sharing soon. In the meantime, here is a quick run-down of my past three months- January: I had a fantastic time with my brother M and his beautiful fiancee A when they came down to visit for nine days! I am so happy for them both and so proud they are my family; February: A few things happened in February, not all fun. L finally had Saul removed, and then Weise and Valerie were quite sick for awhile. Tim caught it too, and Adler and I were the last two standing. A week later though, Adler was ill for about two days. But boy, he bounced back quick. I put it down to great genetics. These guys rarely ever get sick. And when they do, it’s usually only for a day or two, unless it’s something big. After antibiotics all around, except Adler! everything quieted down for a while… until.. March! We had a WONDERFUL visit with my beautifully talented cousin, Wonder Woman, who came down for TWO whole weeks, and during the second week, my aunt and uncle joined us! WOW! We had a blast, and enjoyed every minute of it. We went to Zilker Park, Lake Bastrop North Shore, and the Outlet Mall! We spent lazy days on the back patio, sipping coffee and watching the chickens. But best of all, we spent time together. Laughing, talking, reminiscing, and reconnecting. It was hard to see everyone leave, but absence makes the heart grow fonder.. right?

After they left, I knew I had days left to submit an entry to the Spring Jewelry Contest, the brainchild of Shannon of Vixen’s Natural Jewelry, and sponsored by Szarka of Magpie Gemstones. I had a few sketches, a few ideas, two of which stood out. My first attempt, a wire-wrapped butterfly pendant that would hang on a chain made of handmade links and copper chain, ended in disaster when just as I had finally succeeded in getting the main body outlined and bedecked in garnet chips with a pearl body and antenna, a wire broke. *GASP* Much cussing ensued, followed by a few tears, and finally, acceptance. Only three stages of grief were covered on that project. So I decided to move on to the piece I had first thought of, and push forward. I created a scene pendant I named “Ode to Spring”, a combination of Copper, brass and “vintage” copper, amethyst bird eggs, with an amethyst mama bird from Magpie Gemstones. Glass flowers and leaves sprout at the tree base while tiny, new leaves start to shyly poke through the tree limbs, and it is hung on a handmade chain/copper chain just as the butterfly would have been. Take a look:

Here is a close-up of the pendant:

It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it did turn out exactly as I pictured it in my head. I received great feedback from it, good, constructive criticism, and I finally got the nerve to “put something out there” so to speak. I have only ever given away jewelry I’ve made, or tidied it away in a shoe box under the bathroom sink. I always look at my work and think it isn’t good enough for the general public and that nobody would be interested, or, as Weise would say, people are going to laugh at me. Guess what? They didn’t.

New Year’s Day, 2012

New Year’s Day, 2012

I thought that in light of the New Year, I should get started on my new blog. I love to craft in all mediums, and I love to write. Crafthopper was thought up sometime around 2 am, while chatting with my bff, L, and having a heckuva hard time sticking to one subject while we discussed craft ideas for the next craft faire we wanted to participate in. As I scoured my latest internet obsession, Pinterest, my list of possible projects mounted and ranged from simple cut-and-glue felt projects, to complex wire-wrapped jewelry, easy whip-up-crochet-hats, to fair-isle knitted wraps. I thought to myself, “Gah! it’s crazy how I hop around from one project to the next, from one category to the next! Like a grasshopper!” And then I couldn’t get the phrase “you are very wise, crafthopper” said in a Mr. Miyagi voice, out of my head.

I know I am not the first person to ever conjure up this phrase, and I am not claiming to be the sole-inventor of such persona. I merely liked how it encompasses my entire crafting mindset, attitude and personality. So if anyone out in the world wide web feels I am stealing their idea, they can shove it. Ya should have patented it long before I came along.
