Two steps forward…

Two steps forward…

One step back? That’s how it seems when one is organizing a Craft Room!! Today’s installation of The Crafthopper News will feature updates on Mama’s Craft Room, the W00T from ZeroLandFill Austin last weekend, as well as a few crafty things that happened thereafter.
First up, Craft Room Pictures:
After I finally finished painting, I was worried I would lose momentum, and fizzle out. So I rushed to buy shelving, and decided wire shelves that can hold up to 300lbs per shelf would be best for my fabrics. Fabric can be VERY HEAVY!! I had always wanted to paint the room a “robin egg blue” and in the end, I used two colors-Serendipity for the main wall color, and Oasis for the slanted wall and ceiling. What perfect color names for my Craft Room!

Fabric Storage

That is a closeup picture. To help create the illusion that I had it all going on by that point. In reality, the room was in utter chaos! I had moved everything to the center of the room to paint, and now had also added to the chaos by pulling out every box, bag, or otherwise storage device full of fabric and started sorting through it. The mid-result looked like this:

Fabric storage in progress

Not too bad, I suppose, but if you really, really want to know how hard it is to “organize” a Craft Room, take a look at the Chaos that greeted one when one walked through the door:

Utter Chaos

Crazy, amrite?? To confound things just a little further, I had much assistance from my little helpers:

Mama's Helper

He was quite proud of himself for climbing up onto that box, that yes, contained my yarn. Well, some ..of…my yarn. 😉

Proud

During the assembly of the shelves, I only suffered one serious injury when I tried to move one of those little plastic pieces up that supports the shelves on the correct groove, and didn’t want to take the entire thing apart, so I thought I could get away with just loosening up one corner, and pushing the plastic piece up, but then when I hammered up, it came right back down, pinching my hand in the process:

Ouch.

Now, those pictures are from two weeks ago. Remember the beginning of this post, when I said something about two steps forward, one step back? Here’s are a few more pictures, taken last week:

Sewing Area

In the opposite corner, there is a bit of chaos going on as well:

chaos corner

On the opposite side of the room, in one corner, is where the jewelry-making is attempted. Notice I didn’t say “happens”? After yesterday’s fiasco, I can’t say anything gets made. More on that later.

Looking across to the other corner, you can see the Kids’ Corner:

Valerie has claimed Her Seat in the jewelry-making area:

She has made several very sweet necklaces, and is currently working on some rainbow room decor. Pics to come.
So you can see, the more organized I get, the more unorganized I my space becomes! Hopefully, I will have better organized pictures for you soon. Moving the cutting table to its rightful spot in the room sure helped with productivity, and seeing most of my fabric and other materials out inspires me and moves me to create. So far, all I have created is a bigger mess. 🙂

Next up, ZeroLandFill Austin! Here is a few quick pics of our loot:
Here is a picture of the vinyl flooring squares and large ceramic tiles we got:

Vinyl flooring, a few large tiles, and carpet squares!

Here is a picture of the wood flooring sample we scored that Tim can use to fabricate knife handles, since they are solid wood!

And:

We were afraid the carpet tiles would blow away while we drove, so we tucked them up under the truck box. Here they are, after being pulled out and stacked up. BTW, carpet tiles are HEAVY, and should only be carried by The Muscle:

That’s his “Don’t post my picture on Facebook” face. Good thing I’m only posting it on my blog! It’s always important to use proper body mechanics when lifting heavy things: Feet firmly planted in a wide stance, lift with your legs, not your back, and always, always make sure you have a great kilt on!

When transporting carpet tiles from one area to another, sometimes the “one-shoulder” technique helps:

Oh, how I love my burly Strong-man! *Swoon*! Ok, I guess that’s enough torture for him for one day!
Here is what I have done so far with our findings:

Chair mat under my sewing chair

So you see, we have started to put them to good use! I duct taped them together, and they have made a huge difference in how well these chairs roll! No more scratching up my laminate.
The carpet squares will also be joined in a similar fashion and are going to replace the worn-out living room rug. It has served us well.

Other crafting news, Tim has discovered a new talent for carving bone! So far, he has made bone buttons:

First bone button

He made four all together.

In addition, he carved a couple hei matau or bone fish-hook. He did a great job!

Hei matau

He has also been making antler buttons, from deer he hunted himself:

I have been thinking about listing these all, but gosh darnit, I’m having a hard time parting with them! I keep telling myself, he can make more! But there is something about that very “first one” that just makes you want to hold on to it..
In other news, the kids have been busy building nests to “get more birds or wildlife to move to our yard…..” Complete with glow-in-the-dark stars on a slice of oak:

So proud of themselves.

It was L’s birthday the 15th, and when she was on her way over for her birthday dinner, I realized I didn’t have any birthday wrapping paper, or bag that would fit her present. So I scavenged my Craft Room, and here’s what I came up with:

Yes, this is what happens when a crafthopper realizes she doesn’t have wrapping paper: 4 layers of tissue paper, green floral tape accented with a handmade, crochet flower left over from my wedding! =D

I’m going to sign off for now. This has been an all day writing and a certain someone is making it difficult to do much more to it right now. In the next installment, I will follow up on the jewelry-making fiasco this past week, as well as pictures of Valerie’s creations, Weise’s awesome designs, and hopefully, pictures of a much more organized, clean Craft Room!
Til then my friends, peace-out! =^..^=

“I love deadlines…

“I love deadlines…

I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.” I love Douglass Adams. Great books. But I digress. “Deadlines?” you say. Well, self-imposed deadlines are still deadlines, right? I had goals that were not quite all realized this week. I started out great! Monday, I retreated to Mama’s Craft Room, and cut out bunches of my over-sized receiving blankets with matching burp cloths out of the niftiest flannel I’ve seen to date. I got the serger going, and I really love the new thread I got. I took some decent pictures, and Tuesday, voila! Mama’s Craft Room went live on Etsy! Well, it’s “Made In Mama’s Craft Room“, but close enough! My goal was to list something by Tuesday. That evening, I made ready several of my snuggle blankets, all set to be lightly quilted and sewn. But horror of horrors! My Janome 5700 is skipping stitches! I have had this machine since 1999, and it has been my faithful companion ever since. I admit, I have neglected it at times, going months without allowing it to stitch a single stitch, and then WHAM! spending several weeks in a row sewing several hours a day. (Can you guess what time of year that was??) But I have always kept it cleaned, oiled on occasion, and generally took decent care of it. But, she fails me now. I found a place- Stitch Lab– to get her looked at. $75 to clean, general maintenance, and minor repairs. What’s Mama to do? I expect I will be heading that way next week.

In the meantime, I had a GREAT time at our Faux group. We learned kuhmihimo, taught to us by a talented lady named Sue, of Originals. I didn’t think I would get so absorbed in it, but here I am, 11:41 pm on a Friday night, and it’s sitting in front of me on my desk, and I pause in typing this blog post to work a few turns of the kuhmi-wheel. And now I have yet another, new obsession. As if I needed another! But wire and metal working will always have my heart. Even now, as I typed that last line, visions of a metal project I have started is dancing in front of my eyes. My sketch book and pencil to my left, open and waiting for me to jot down yet another addition to the very simple design. Here is a sneak peak at my kuhmihimo:

It was supposed to be a bracelet. That is what the tutorial was for.. however, I didn’t want to waste the Fireline, so we will see where it takes us! I will keep you posted…..

Big day tomorrow. I heard through a nice lady from my Faux group that there is a group of people running a project called ZeroLandfill. It was started in Ohio, and has spread through several states. Luckily, Austin has caught the bug, and tomorrow they are having a huge giveaway? It’s the only word I can think of this late. Basically, come rummage through all the refuse, and bring your own bags! I will have not only several of my trusty reusable bags, but the wagon, too. I think it’ll be easier than the stroller with Adler.

I will be sure to post any goodies I score! Til then, my favorite audience, I bid you adieu.. =^..^=

Cab Wrapping Class

Cab Wrapping Class

What a great class! I finally feel like I have gotten my head wrapped around the entire concept (haha) and am SO excited to get started wrapping these cabs (short for cabochons) I’ve been hording! I am amazed at what a bit of wire, a little rock, and a whole lot of cussing can do when brought together in a harmonious fashion. I want to go back in time and personally thank the first person to ever wrap a stone and wear it! We spent over three hours wrapping, shaping, bending and forming three sweet little pendants, and we even able to patina two of them before leaving class! I put a patina on the last one when I got the kids to bed, and then tumbled everything all together for good measure. I am pretty stoked about the results and feel, well, pretty proud of them! Check them out:

Hopefully, I will hone my skills, and maybe one day soon be able to list something on my Etsy shop! Right now, it just sits there, all empty and lonely. (My sewn baby items will be listed there soon-but that’s for another blog post). It always surprises me the energy I get from creating something. I feel lighter, and energized, ready to take on the world. The momentum builds, and I find myself pacing my Craft Room, trying to figure out where to start. Last night, while these pendants tumbled, I started forming the links I had designed in my sketch book, to try and start seeing if any of them are even feasible in wire-form. I had some great results, and a few disappointing results. But overall, a successful mission. I love the look of handmade chain, so I will be churning many a link out! But today, I have a Very Important Birthday party for L, and must ground myself and return to earth, and get started on the prep! See you next week! =^..^=

Whew!

Whew!

Ok, I admit it. Revamping Mama’s Craft Room is and has been thus far, a MAJOR undertaking! I thought I would be done by now, everything organized, a place for everything and everything in its’ place. I thought I’d have all my little collected treasures scattered about on display, inspiring me, tempting me to linger and gaze upon them. But no. I have most of my fabric on the shelves, sorted in a way that makes sense to *me*, I have my yarns mostly on the shelves in a way that makes sense to *me*, and I have much of my jewelry-making supplies sorted and tentatively shelved. But I feel so much chaotic energy in the room right now that I feel I have reached a stalemate. I think I need to move T’s bed to where I plan to put the sleep sofa when we get one, and move my cutting table, and that will jump start the whole process again. I sat up there last night, opening and closing beading containers, bending a little wire, and just plain shuffling things around on my new desk, and oculd not find my groove. Yes, I think The Big Items need to move from the center of the room. They are completely interrupting the flow in there and my feng-shui is way off.

In the meantime, I have my cab wrapping class tomorrow with the very talented Karen Meador, Ph.D., of Dreamcatcher Designs TX. She is a great teacher, very patient and encouraging. Hopefully, taking her class will get me on track for making that certain something I need to get made before mid-May. 😉

I have been crocheting sweet little summertime necklaces with cotton crochet thread and sweet millifiori beads. The idea comes from a necklace Shannon Williams of Vixens Natural Jewelry found on Etsy. They have a cute button closure and are hand-washable.
I don’t know yet what I’m going to do with them all, maybe list them? Pics will be posted soon.

Hopefully, we will have a productive weekend, and I will be able to post Craft Room pictures early next week! Have a great one, folks! =^..^=

Accomplishment!

Accomplishment!

Well, that was a crazy long weekend! I spent two and a half days painting!! And only had to send Tim to Lowe’s TWICE to get more paint! Note: Mama’s Craft Room is far bigger than I thought. Lots more wall space than Valerie’s bedroom, that’s for sure! But I am elated with the results, feeling so proud of myself for busting ass getting this done. It has given me renewed motivational and creative energy and I am ready to keep going! The color is a bit brighter than I had originally had in mind, and a tinged more blue, but nevertheless, I love it. The color in my head would have been too dark for the room and would have made it feel smaller. Clean up from my painting escapades is going to be interesting. But since the floor is a good quality laminate, I should be able to just use a little floor cleaner on a Scotch Brite sponge. Unlike cleanup after painting in the kids’ rooms, where there is a sealed concrete floor. There I couldn’t use any abrasive as it would have taken off the seal. So. Tomorrow, the rearranging process will begin, new curtains going up, and some unpacking will commence! Not too much though, as I don’t have the shelves yet. But the end of the week, I will! I forgot to take good “Before” pictures before I pushed all the things into the center of the room and piled boxes, bags, bins and clutter into the adjoined bathroom tub, but I will most definitely be posting “After” pics!

Stay Tuned, for the next installment of.. Mama’s Craft Room Unfolds.. =^..^=
