6th Bead Soup Blog Party!

6th Bead Soup Blog Party!

I’m a few days late posting this, and a few days more late in updating my blog in general!  I have been a busy bee, trying to keep on top of the things I need to get done for the month of August! Aside from Blog Hopping, I have an Etsy challenge, and weekly color challenge, and the Smokin’ Hot Monthly Jewelry challenge, oh my! AND, the projects I am getting done for the wedding! I, once again, have over extended myself. So I decided I will only tackle that which I must get done, that have rigid deadlines, and as I finish those projects, I can focus and not feel so scattered, and hopefully get the others done as well.

Without further ado, please visit my fellow Bead Soup Blog Party participants by clicking this link:

https://sites.google.com/site/beadsoupparty2012/home/bead-soup-reveal-2-11th-august-2012 (Thank you, FusionMuse, for that accumulation!!)

This Blog Party is hosted by Lori Anderson, of Lori Anderson Designs. Check out her Blog!  I don’t know how she does it, but Lori always seems to have fun things going on!

The third and final reveal that *I* and my very talented partner Gretchen Nation of ArtFoodLodging are in is next Saturday, August 25th, so check back here, as I will most likely NOT be posting anything before then! (I cannot WAIT to see what Gretchen whips up with the soup I sent her!!)  And when we get back from our trip,  I will make sure to post all about our adventures, and will most definitely be sharing pictures of the rocks I’m sure I’ll be bringing home  =^..^=

Pottery

Pottery

As promised, I have pottery pictures! I didn’t like my platter much when I first finished. I hate feeling hurried, but we ran late getting there, and had a few *ahem* unco-operative people with us. So I didn’t get to focus as much as I would have otherwise. I need to try and figure out a way to make it more enjoyable for everyone, and yet still get to add the kids’ touches to the things I paint there. L snuck her tile away before I could get a picture of it, but it has a super sweet owl on it.

It was hard to get a picture without glare from the glossy surface! But I am absolutely in love with the results!! It’s amazing how different a piece looks after firing.
I tried to make sure you can see each hand print as the “leaves” of the tree.  Adler’s, then Weise reaching up towards the top of the tree, and Valerie’s on the right. A little heart on each of them..
Five stars in the sky.. One, with a tiny heart, for my Selma. Sometimes, I get it just right. Symbolism.. I don’t always mean it. And I’ve always known I could express myself in writing. But I’m learning, lately, that I can also express through art. Maybe not everyone knows the background story to anything or everything I make.. but I do. And when I look a finished piece that has emotions, feelings and thoughts tied to it, it makes me happy, almost maybe relieved, to see my feelings put into something tangible.

Moving on.

I am getting more and more excited as several Big Events loom ever closer this month!! The biggest of course, is our drive to Oregon for the wedding!! Also on the calendar this month is the Hot Stuff class (yes!! Look out world, Mama’s playing with FIRE!) that I am taking with Karen Meador, Ph.D., of Dreamcatcher Designs TX,  and *insert drum roll here* The Big Reveal!! August 25th is my reveal date for Lori Anderson’s Bead Soup Blog Party and I have been playing around with the items my fantastic Bead Soup partner, Gretchen Nation of ArtFoodLodging and here at her Etsy Shop, sent me way back in the beginning of July! I am so excited to see what she cooks up as well. I totally didn’t think to take a picture of the Soup I sent her, but Gretchen was on the ball and posted a great one over on her blog. Check it out if you have time!

Meanwhile, deep in the heart of the country, I am fast at work crocheting sweet flower girl dresses, making other wedding essentials, and dreaming up great wire-work ideas that I jot down in my sketchbook. I have a few new items that I will hopefully be posting in the next few days, and I hope you all love them as much as I do!  =^..^=

Crafty Weekend Update!

Crafty Weekend Update!

This weekend was a whirlwind of activity! L came to stay the weekend and we crafted up a storm in Mama’s Craft Room! Part of my See one, Do one, Teach one, I showed her the ins and outs of metal stamping, metal embossing, and using alcohol inks on metal to the best of my ability. Great fun was had all around and this was the one piece we completed, after all the experimenting:

Isn’t she lovely?! Shh.. don’t tell her I posted her pic on the interwebz.. 😉

We also spent an evening on our annual pilgrimage to Cafe Monet! We were a few months behind, and ended up being a tad rushed, but I cannot WAIT to see how our tiles and my platter turn out! Every year for the past four years we have been going, and it’s so fun to see the dramatic changes in the pottery after it’s been fired. It’s also great fun to bring home and collect these tiles that I plan to turn into a table top! Adler was not a team player, however, and ended up only “helping” me with my platter, and didn’t actually make his own.. which I kind of regret now, since Valerie was his age the first time SHE made one.. ah well. Maybe we will have to make a second trip sometime soon.. I will share them with you after we pick them up Thursday.

Also over the weekend, I finally started and FINISHED an idea that has been morphing deep within the recesses of my brain since the beginning of July. I’m on a Wire Working Etsy team, and they were having a monthly contest: Bugs! So for the entire month of July, I have been pondering, forming and growing this dragonfly in my head, waiting for just the right moment for it to hatch:

I call it “Dragonfly in July” and the tune of Reading Rainbow floats through my head every time I type it!I took a few pictures in different light qualities, so you can see just how awesome it looks no matter how bright or dim. This would look great on a chain or leather cord, or even if you just wanted a sun catcher in the window! The head and tail are gold sheen obsidian, with a labradorite and lapis body, flanked by wings in apatite, amethyst, green aventurine, and quartz, wrapped with love in copper. The labradorite has a nice flash, as you can see in one (or two..?) of the pictures. Flash is hard to catch in a photo!  As per my usual, I procrastinated just enough to light a gentle fire under my arse to meet the July 31st deadline, and I am very excited and pleased with the results. Ok, it was a roaring bonfire, but who’s askin??  I do have to say, working with those tiny apatite chips was horrid. I kept smashing them with my tools. I think I will keep the rest and set them in resin….. yea….. I can see it now…………………………*daydream*

Ahem.. anyway. I have many more new items that will be coming out soon. It has been an incredible balancing act between jewelry making up in my Craft Room during the day time, and after the kids are in bed, crocheting my fingers off to get the flower girl dresses done for the upcoming wedding!! I exagerate. They are crocheting up quickly, and I only restarted Valerie’s dress three times before I got the top looking right, and then only redid the arm holes four times until it was just right =D  But that’s why I did Valerie’s first, to check the gauge, yadda yadda. I am going to try and squeeze in a little bitty dress, too, for baby E! Hopefully, I will have plenty of time. If not, it’s a LOOOOOONG drive to Oregon, so I’m sure I’ll get it done before the wedding 😉

Well, until next time, keep on keepin’ on! =^..^=

Magpie Gemstones Free Beads for Fans!

Magpie Gemstones Free Beads for Fans!

I was lucky enough to win Free Beads from Magpie Gemstones just for being their best fan! Magpie Gemstones has always had great promotions including a yearly draw for a $200 shopping spree. You can check out their promotions, and sign up for their newsletter here, and visit them on Facebook to take part in their latest promotion: Best Facebook Fan! Every other month, Magpie Gemstones will be giving away free beads to their best Facebook fan and all you have to do is interact with them on Facebook! It’s that simple.

Magpie Gemstones is a family owned and operated local business that offers incredibly affordable, high quality beads, gemstones, findings and more at wholesale prices. Small businesses, start-up jewelry makers, and established artisans alike can now easily find materials they need to create beautiful jewelry without having to buy in bulk to get a better price, and they can rest assured that they quality they receive is top-notch, thanks to the rigorous testing and quality assurance measures Magpie Gemstones takes. Just look at how they test their turquoise!  And did you know that you can usually tell if a bead is dyed by looking for little “dye spots” on the bead-little streaks of darker color where the dye pooled and collected on the stone? I do now, thanks to Magpie Gemstones, because they take the time to look for it on the beads they sell, and share their findings with their customers! Full disclosure descriptions are just one of the many, many things I love about shopping with Magpie Gemstones, as I always know exactly what I’m buying, and in turn, I can tell *my* customers exactly what they’re buying when they purchase my jewelry.

I won’t keep you in suspense any longer. Here are the fantastic beads Magpie Gemstones very generously sent me!

I absolutely LOVE them and love that the more masculine vibe I get from this set of beads is really going to take me outside of my “comfort zone” in what I create with them! As soon as I opened the package, ideas started rolling through my mind. The turquoise is just amazing! If you think you’ve seen turquoise in Hobby Lobby or in any other big box craft store before, you have never seen turquoise, period. The weight, feel, and overall gorgeous appearance of this turquoise is so earthy and I cannot wait until I can sit down experiment with it! And the jasper! Jasper is one of my favorite stones. All types! I cannot wait to combine it with the blackstone into this great idea I already have. Stayed tuned, as I will definitely be sharing the the creations I come up with! =^..^=

Thank you, Thank you, Magpie Gemstones!!

What’s In A Name Blog Hop!!

What’s In A Name Blog Hop!!

First and foremost, I want to wish Shelley Graham Turner of Tori Sophia and Fabric of My Life a very happy birthday!! She is the organizer of this very interesting and fun blog hop: What’s In A Name?? Shelley is a self-proclaimed nosy curious person, and during another blog hop recently came across blog names that intrigued her. I was one of the lucky people she asked to join her hop!

My story is two-fold, since I both keep this blog, AND have a website/business by a different name. I think I’m going to cheat in my story-telling here, by copying/pasting from sections of both my websites:

“I have always loved crafting, sewing, crocheting, knitting, jewelry making and on and on. Every time I would finish a project, I’d say, “why can’t I just do this for a living?” After my youngest baby came along, I wanted to be home with my children for awhile, watch them grow, and not miss a thing. I am grateful that we were able to make that happen, but I still feel a strong need to contribute more to our financial well-being. Since I am crafting anyway, and after years of being told by friends and family “you should sell these!”, Mama’s Craft Room was born. Why “Mama’s Craft Room”, you ask? Well, shortly after we moved into our dream home, the upstairs “bonus room” became my craft room. And every time we unpacked something that was craft related, my husband would say to one of the kids “that goes up in Mama’s craft room”! I had joked back then, that I should start a business and call it Mama’s Craft Room, since that’s where everything would be created. It just seemed to be a very logical name, given that I am a crafter of all trades-a “Crafthopper”, if you will, it wouldn’t have made sense to call it Mama’s Sewing Room, or Jewelry by Mama. Sometimes, though, I wonder if I should have opted for a more elegant, grown up sounding business name…? Nah… then it wouldn’t be *ME*!
Like my banner on my shops, and my website Mama’s Craft Room. The items in the header photo are little tidbits of my life. The bouquet I crocheted for my wedding, beads, yarns, threads, a tiny FUNCTIONING Singer sewing machine and chicken pin cushion I found in my gramma’s attic, the ceramic pot with two of my children’s handprints painted on the sides, the birds-because Valerie said the big bird was me, and the little bird her, the Dia de los muertes nurse, the cats, the R2-D2 I found in my dad’s house… All these things trigger a memory for me, they make me smile to look at them, they represent a tiny part of the many faces of who I am and what makes me the person I am. They are the many styles of *ME*.

I think I have CAADHD. Crafty Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Do you know how many half-knitted sweaters are up in my Craft Room?? How many crocheted lovies, waiting to be assembled so that they too may know the joys of having limbs?? How many baby blankies that need to be sewn-already cut out, just need to be sewn- so that they too may feel the love of a good swaddling?? How many beads I have had for over 8 years, wire waiting to be bent, twisted, molded and shaped?? I have books on all of the above, plus soap making, candle making, lace making-both tatting and spool, cross stitch, hand embroidery, plus countless yards upon yards of fabric that I’m going to sew clothing and other children’s and women’s items with. But lately, my heart rests on jewelry. Wire work, and metalsmithing have taken root, and I think I have found a profound passion. Not that I am any less passionate about the other things I do. No. When I create, I create with all my heart. I put my soul, blood, sweat and tears into things I create. Just ask L. She watched me lovingly knit a First Teddy Bear for a friend’s first baby. And while sewing his limbs to his body, I stabbed myself no few than three times, drawing blood each time to the point I had to stop and wait for the bleeding to stop so I wouldn’t get poor Teddy dirty! I have taken apart baby blankets 2 feet into it, because I notice a mistake in the third row. I have set aside sweaters because the sleeves continuously look ridiculous, no matter how many times I have remade them. I have take my super flush cutters to wire just before the bail is to be made to finish a piece. All because It. Just. Doesn’t. Look. Right. This is just a small example. I have been crafting over 30 years. I was seven years old when my grandma taught me to crochet. I was knitting at 12. Sewing, cross stitch and embroidery at 14-15. The rest is history.

Crafting opens my mind. When I am focused and creating something, even if I don’t plan, and I am letting the piece take control to see where it goes and what it becomes-I feel my mind expand by fathoms! It is a meditation, a supplication to my mental health. Centered on an inner focus that can be hard to reach during the hectic chaos of day to day life.  It is when I feel truly grounded. Whole. Complete. Solid.  I feel like I am taking root in the earth, a solid foundation, an old oak tree, thick and gnarly with age, the years giving her wisdom and a depth of knowing.. When I am there, it is an almost trance-like state, and I find it hard to tear myself away. Usually, only my children have the magic touch-a word, a sigh, mama, im hungry.

I am the Crafthopper. I bounce from craft to craft, wanting to do it all, know it all, to make beautiful things with anything I put my hands on. I want to be able to make people smile, laugh, and feel beautiful in a simple way. I want people to feel loved when they receive my jewelry as a birthday present from their husbands. I want children to feel loved when they are given a Teddy Bear I have created just for them. I want babies to feel loved and secure in the blankies I make. I want my children to see they can have fun, be creative, make beautiful things. I want them to see they can take a few simple materials and with them, create objects of wonder people can enjoy. I want them to learn the joy of self-satisfaction of a job well done, that a little hard work can reap rewards far greater than monetary. I want them to learn to expand their minds, the way I feel mine expand, so they too may know the peace and strength I feel. And I want them to always remember Mama’s Craft Room as a place of magic and wonder.. where they too can hop from craft to craft until they find the One that sets their minds ablaze and their hearts a-patter.

I hope you have enjoyed my little story. I certainly have enjoyed writing it-oh yes, another one of my passions is writing. But that’s a WHOLE ‘nuther blog 😉
Remember to always do what feels right, and when it starts to feel like fun, you’re there. Peace. =^..^=
