Magpie Gemstones Free Beads for Fans!

I was lucky enough to win Free Beads from Magpie Gemstones just for being their best fan! Magpie Gemstones has always had great promotions including a yearly draw for a $200 shopping spree. You can check out their promotions, and sign up for their newsletter here, and visit them on Facebook to take part in their latest promotion: Best Facebook Fan! Every other month, Magpie Gemstones will be giving away free beads to their best Facebook fan and all you have to do is interact with them on Facebook! It’s that simple.

Magpie Gemstones is a family owned and operated local business that offers incredibly affordable, high quality beads, gemstones, findings and more at wholesale prices. Small businesses, start-up jewelry makers, and established artisans alike can now easily find materials they need to create beautiful jewelry without having to buy in bulk to get a better price, and they can rest assured that they quality they receive is top-notch, thanks to the rigorous testing and quality assurance measures Magpie Gemstones takes. Just look at how they test their turquoise!  And did you know that you can usually tell if a bead is dyed by looking for little “dye spots” on the bead-little streaks of darker color where the dye pooled and collected on the stone? I do now, thanks to Magpie Gemstones, because they take the time to look for it on the beads they sell, and share their findings with their customers! Full disclosure descriptions are just one of the many, many things I love about shopping with Magpie Gemstones, as I always know exactly what I’m buying, and in turn, I can tell *my* customers exactly what they’re buying when they purchase my jewelry.

I won’t keep you in suspense any longer. Here are the fantastic beads Magpie Gemstones very generously sent me!

I absolutely LOVE them and love that the more masculine vibe I get from this set of beads is really going to take me outside of my “comfort zone” in what I create with them! As soon as I opened the package, ideas started rolling through my mind. The turquoise is just amazing! If you think you’ve seen turquoise in Hobby Lobby or in any other big box craft store before, you have never seen turquoise, period. The weight, feel, and overall gorgeous appearance of this turquoise is so earthy and I cannot wait until I can sit down experiment with it! And the jasper! Jasper is one of my favorite stones. All types! I cannot wait to combine it with the blackstone into this great idea I already have. Stayed tuned, as I will definitely be sharing the the creations I come up with! =^..^=

Thank you, Thank you, Magpie Gemstones!!

What’s In A Name Blog Hop!!

What’s In A Name Blog Hop!!

First and foremost, I want to wish Shelley Graham Turner of Tori Sophia and Fabric of My Life a very happy birthday!! She is the organizer of this very interesting and fun blog hop: What’s In A Name?? Shelley is a self-proclaimed nosy curious person, and during another blog hop recently came across blog names that intrigued her. I was one of the lucky people she asked to join her hop!

My story is two-fold, since I both keep this blog, AND have a website/business by a different name. I think I’m going to cheat in my story-telling here, by copying/pasting from sections of both my websites:

“I have always loved crafting, sewing, crocheting, knitting, jewelry making and on and on. Every time I would finish a project, I’d say, “why can’t I just do this for a living?” After my youngest baby came along, I wanted to be home with my children for awhile, watch them grow, and not miss a thing. I am grateful that we were able to make that happen, but I still feel a strong need to contribute more to our financial well-being. Since I am crafting anyway, and after years of being told by friends and family “you should sell these!”, Mama’s Craft Room was born. Why “Mama’s Craft Room”, you ask? Well, shortly after we moved into our dream home, the upstairs “bonus room” became my craft room. And every time we unpacked something that was craft related, my husband would say to one of the kids “that goes up in Mama’s craft room”! I had joked back then, that I should start a business and call it Mama’s Craft Room, since that’s where everything would be created. It just seemed to be a very logical name, given that I am a crafter of all trades-a “Crafthopper”, if you will, it wouldn’t have made sense to call it Mama’s Sewing Room, or Jewelry by Mama. Sometimes, though, I wonder if I should have opted for a more elegant, grown up sounding business name…? Nah… then it wouldn’t be *ME*!
Like my banner on my shops, and my website Mama’s Craft Room. The items in the header photo are little tidbits of my life. The bouquet I crocheted for my wedding, beads, yarns, threads, a tiny FUNCTIONING Singer sewing machine and chicken pin cushion I found in my gramma’s attic, the ceramic pot with two of my children’s handprints painted on the sides, the birds-because Valerie said the big bird was me, and the little bird her, the Dia de los muertes nurse, the cats, the R2-D2 I found in my dad’s house… All these things trigger a memory for me, they make me smile to look at them, they represent a tiny part of the many faces of who I am and what makes me the person I am. They are the many styles of *ME*.

I think I have CAADHD. Crafty Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Do you know how many half-knitted sweaters are up in my Craft Room?? How many crocheted lovies, waiting to be assembled so that they too may know the joys of having limbs?? How many baby blankies that need to be sewn-already cut out, just need to be sewn- so that they too may feel the love of a good swaddling?? How many beads I have had for over 8 years, wire waiting to be bent, twisted, molded and shaped?? I have books on all of the above, plus soap making, candle making, lace making-both tatting and spool, cross stitch, hand embroidery, plus countless yards upon yards of fabric that I’m going to sew clothing and other children’s and women’s items with. But lately, my heart rests on jewelry. Wire work, and metalsmithing have taken root, and I think I have found a profound passion. Not that I am any less passionate about the other things I do. No. When I create, I create with all my heart. I put my soul, blood, sweat and tears into things I create. Just ask L. She watched me lovingly knit a First Teddy Bear for a friend’s first baby. And while sewing his limbs to his body, I stabbed myself no few than three times, drawing blood each time to the point I had to stop and wait for the bleeding to stop so I wouldn’t get poor Teddy dirty! I have taken apart baby blankets 2 feet into it, because I notice a mistake in the third row. I have set aside sweaters because the sleeves continuously look ridiculous, no matter how many times I have remade them. I have take my super flush cutters to wire just before the bail is to be made to finish a piece. All because It. Just. Doesn’t. Look. Right. This is just a small example. I have been crafting over 30 years. I was seven years old when my grandma taught me to crochet. I was knitting at 12. Sewing, cross stitch and embroidery at 14-15. The rest is history.

Crafting opens my mind. When I am focused and creating something, even if I don’t plan, and I am letting the piece take control to see where it goes and what it becomes-I feel my mind expand by fathoms! It is a meditation, a supplication to my mental health. Centered on an inner focus that can be hard to reach during the hectic chaos of day to day life.  It is when I feel truly grounded. Whole. Complete. Solid.  I feel like I am taking root in the earth, a solid foundation, an old oak tree, thick and gnarly with age, the years giving her wisdom and a depth of knowing.. When I am there, it is an almost trance-like state, and I find it hard to tear myself away. Usually, only my children have the magic touch-a word, a sigh, mama, im hungry.

I am the Crafthopper. I bounce from craft to craft, wanting to do it all, know it all, to make beautiful things with anything I put my hands on. I want to be able to make people smile, laugh, and feel beautiful in a simple way. I want people to feel loved when they receive my jewelry as a birthday present from their husbands. I want children to feel loved when they are given a Teddy Bear I have created just for them. I want babies to feel loved and secure in the blankies I make. I want my children to see they can have fun, be creative, make beautiful things. I want them to see they can take a few simple materials and with them, create objects of wonder people can enjoy. I want them to learn the joy of self-satisfaction of a job well done, that a little hard work can reap rewards far greater than monetary. I want them to learn to expand their minds, the way I feel mine expand, so they too may know the peace and strength I feel. And I want them to always remember Mama’s Craft Room as a place of magic and wonder.. where they too can hop from craft to craft until they find the One that sets their minds ablaze and their hearts a-patter.

I hope you have enjoyed my little story. I certainly have enjoyed writing it-oh yes, another one of my passions is writing. But that’s a WHOLE ‘nuther blog 😉
Remember to always do what feels right, and when it starts to feel like fun, you’re there. Peace. =^..^=

Cabs II Class Fun!

Cabs II Class Fun!

I had been looking forward to this class since it was first mentioned months ago! In fact, I’d been looking forward to it since I took the Cabs I class! Dr. Karen Meador, Ph. D. of Dreamcatcher Designs TX, creates an environment of learning through wit, fun and natural inclination, in which it is impossible to not come away smile on your face and new skills in your pocket. Through gentle sternness, she was able to tame our rambunctious group this afternoon, and we managed to create not just one, but TWO wonderful pieces! (I am going to start bring my camera to class, to take pictures during the creative learning process!!)
We had a great group of students today, and I really enjoy the company of the ladies who were present! I met a few new faces, and was glad to see the few I already knew!
Here are my two pieces, after I polished them with a good ol’ Sunshine polishing cloth when I got home:

I love them. The stone in the little one measures exactly two centimeters. I had never wrapped anything so small! But I selected that cabochon specifically to challenge myself. The wrap on it is a creation of Karen’s and *I* call it “Karen’s Hug Wrap”. I think after learning how she made it directly from her, and hearing her descriptions, and the background of how she came up with the concept, it makes perfect sense!
Here are a few pictures of that one from slightly different angles:

Of course, I had to add my favorite additions: tight little coils on either side. It just wouldn’t be *me* if I didn’t!
The larger pendant was another fun challenge. See those little prongs? That’s what holds the stone in the wrap on both sides. It was fun to learn, and I can’t wait to experiment with more ideas Karen gave us, as well as come up with a few of my own! Here is that one, a little closer:

I really need to get the Muscle to build me that light box.. too much glare! It takes away from the stone. I had a great time, and look forward to the next installation of jewelry-making education: Hot Stuff!

Later on, back at home, we took the kids out to play after dinner. We could see a storm rolling in, and managed to snap a few pictures before it got too dark:

I took these two with my hand-me-down Nikon D40. I do need a new lens on it, but she does what she can 🙂 The first picture is actually the reflection of the sunset behind me and the second is the actual sunset. The world is a beautiful place, and I love where I live…

The Muscle decided to hang out for awhile, using his Nikon D7000 to try and capture a few good images of lightening. I’d say he succeeded:

Well, I have homework to do. Til next time, stay dry and remember, don’t take a bath or shower during a lightening storm! =^..^=

When You Wish…

When You Wish…

I have been busy! I have long wanted to try my hand at making a tree of life, and indeed I did make a few before. But I wanted to make something based on a feeling I had, a notion, a little voice in the back of my mind.. I don’t know how to explain it, but I sat down one day and my tree came to life.

I call it “When You Wish Upon A Star” and have made several of these now. I will soon be listing them in my shops! I have many more tree ideas, among other things, and I am planning on getting them all created to my satisfaction in the next few days. I have been playing with rings lately. My favorite by far is my Lost Copper ring:

I am quite pleased with it, and plan to make this and many more to list in my shops!

In other news, our “stained glass” was a hit! The kids had a great time being creative and getting involved in a different medium then they usually get to play with, and the results were fun and beautiful! I have really creative kids! We were going to draw our own pictures to use, but they started getting frustrated with it, so we picked out “coloring pages” that we found on the internet and printed them out. Then, we trimmed them to fit within the boundaries of the plexiglass that we bought at Lowe’s for a couple bucks a piece. We taped them to the plexiglass on the side we did not remove the protective plastic coating, and flipped it over. On the bare plexiglass, we traced the images with a black Sharpie. I had the brilliant idea that after the Sharpie, I would go back over the lines with my hot glue gun, thus creating a more stained glass effect by having the raised wells in which the paint would go, and not run all over the whole thing. However, my children have very keen eyes for detail, and as such, selected extremely detailed images. After outlining the major largest areas on Valerie’s glass, I decided we would forego it all together on Weise’s glass. Then the paints came out. I found “stained glass paints” on clearance at Hobby Lobby several weeks ago, and L brought over more, as I had asked her to pick up the two colors Hobby Lobby didn’t have-we now have enough to last us awhile 😉
The kids painted and perfected, and the end results are fantastic!

Here are the awesome results:

Can you guess which is whose??? It was fun, and I’m sure it’ll be happening again soon! Well, it’s a raining afternoon, and I LOVE to craft when it’s rainy, sort of a meditation.. So, until next time, peace out! =^..^=
